Thoughts on Change

by Jim

When I first published this picture, I described it as “The process of change”. Very simply, it was because that captured the process of the leaves changing from green to red. At the time, I didn’t have any particular ideas of what it illustrated about change, but I think one can see various possibilities in the picture.

For one, it shows change as a process. There are leaves that are totally green, others that are totally red, but most are some combination. In a way, this illustrates that change is often a process rather than a sudden event. Not always, but often. Sometimes the change is so gradual that we don’t even notice it. This is the idea of the “boiling frog”.

Other times the change is gradual but we see it happening. These cases give us a chance to react, depending on how we feel about the change. Sometimes we may be trying to cause the change, in which case its gradual nature may be frustrating.

There are undoubtedly more things one could say about change while pondering a picture like this, but it’s just a nice reminder that pictures can be useful this way. Perhaps this is one aspect of art, when a craft can be used to communicate or inspire ideas in others.
